How the Gold Spot Price Really Affects Your Payout

How the Gold Spot Price Really Affects Your Payout

You look up the gold spot price, picture what your old jewelry should bring, and then the offer at the counter comes in lower than you pictured. That gap is the most common complaint we hear, and it has a plain explanation. The number online is real, but it describes pure gold traded between large institutions, not a chain or a ring in a Lenexa jewelry box.

The verdict is short. The gold spot price sets the starting value of the metal in your jewelry, but the payout you are offered is always lower than spot because a dealer has to buy at a level that leaves room to refine and resell.

The rest of this article explains what moves an offer up or down, and then does something most articles on this topic skip. It tells you what we are short on at KC Gold and Silver, so you know which pieces in your house we would be glad to see.

What the gold spot price is, and what it is not

Spot is the going market rate for pure, 24-karat gold. It moves through the trading day with supply, demand, currencies and the news. Nobody walks into a shop and sells at it, for the same reason a used car does not sell for the sticker on the dealer's lot. The buyer has to hold the metal, send it to be refined or resell it, and carry the risk that the market moves while they wait.

Your jewelry is also not pure gold. Most of it is an alloy, and the karat stamp tells you how much of each piece is gold. A 10K piece carries less gold than a 14K piece, and 18K carries more. So two items of the same weight can produce quite different offers, even when spot is the same for both.

Four things that shape the offer

  • Karat. The stamp, or a test if there is no stamp, decides how much of the piece is gold at all.
  • Weight. Heavier pieces hold more metal. A thick, plain chain can matter more than a delicate ring with a stamp you like better.
  • What is not gold. Clasps, springs, stone settings, solder and any non-gold parts do not count as gold, and we do not pretend they do.
  • The day. Spot moves, so an offer reflects the market that day. Two visits a week apart can differ without anyone doing anything wrong.

We are deliberately not putting formulas or example numbers in this article. A worked example invites you to price your own jewelry from your kitchen, and it will be wrong, because it cannot see the stamp, the solder or the repairs. If you want the longer explanation, our pricing page covers how we approach it, and our guide on what your gold is worth today goes further.

Why a price on a screen cannot replace a test

Karat stamps can be worn away, mislabeled or missing, and plated pieces look like solid ones. That is why everything is tested and weighed in front of you. You watch the scale, you see the result of the test, and you hear how the offer relates to the market before you decide. It costs nothing, there is no pressure, and a free evaluation does not commit you to anything. If you say yes, the cash is same-day.

What we would like to see more of in Lenexa

Gold jewelry comes through the door all the time. Odd earrings, broken chains and old class rings are routine for us. What we do not see enough of is sterling silver for the table, and we would rather say so than leave you guessing.

We are looking for:

  • Tea sets and coffee services
  • Water pitchers
  • Serving trays and platters
  • Bowls
  • Flatware in sterling, whether a full service or a partial one

Many of these were wedding gifts or inheritances that have sat wrapped in cloth for decades. If the pieces are marked sterling, we want to see them. Silver has its own market price, and the same rule applies: we cannot pay retail, because we are not going to set a table with it either. But we are a real buyer for it, and we would rather see your tea set than a ninth broken chain.

You do not need to polish anything first. Tarnish does not change what the piece is made of. Dents, a missing lid or a monogram do not stop us from looking either. Bring what you have, and we will sort out what is sterling and what is plate.

A short list for the visit

  1. Bring the pieces as they are, in the box, bag or drawer liner.
  2. Bring a photo ID.
  3. Set aside anything you want to keep, so you are not deciding in the middle of the counter.
  4. If you want a quicker visit, group the gold in one pile and the silver in another.

When timing matters, and when it does not

Spot rises and falls, and it is fair to be curious about whether to sell now or wait. Nobody can promise where it goes next, and we will not pretend to. If the pieces are doing nothing in a drawer, a visit costs you an hour and an evaluation. If they have meaning for you, keep them. The market will still be there if you change your mind.

Questions people ask about the gold spot price and selling in Lenexa

Why is the offer lower than the number I saw online?

Because the online number is for pure gold traded in large volume between institutions. Your jewelry is an alloy, it has to be tested, and the buyer has to cover refining or resale and market risk. That is why every offer sits below spot.

Does the gold spot price change what KC Gold and Silver offers from day to day?

Yes. Spot moves through the day, so an offer reflects the market when you bring the piece in. If you are on the fence, you can call before you come.

Does a higher karat always mean a bigger offer?

Not always. Karat tells you how much of a piece is gold, but weight matters as well. A heavy 10K chain can hold more gold than a light 18K ring.

Which sterling pieces are you most interested in?

Tea sets, water pitchers, trays, bowls and sterling flatware. We are short on all of them, and we would rather see more.

Am I committed to anything once you have weighed my jewelry?

No. The evaluation is free, there is no pressure, and you can walk out with your pieces and no obligation.

Can I call before I drive to Lenexa?

Yes. Call KC Gold and Silver at (913) 565-4653, which is also (913) 565-GOLD, or visit kcgoldandsilver.com. Tell us what you have and we can say whether it is worth the trip.
