A short history
Struck from 1916 to 1945, the Mercury Dime replaced the Barber Dime and was itself replaced by the Roosevelt Dime after FDR's death. The winged Liberty on the obverse was intended to symbolize freedom of thought — the Mercury nickname stuck because collectors mistook her for the Roman messenger god.
