The three things that matter
Every honest evaluation comes down to three inputs. Anyone quoting you a price without these is guessing or steering you.
- Karat (purity) — how much of the piece is actually gold. 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.5%, 18K is 75%, 24K is 99.9%.
- Weight — measured on a certified scale in grams or pennyweights. Round numbers on the tag don't count; the scale does.
- The current wholesale gold market — a live, worldwide number that moves throughout the day.
Bullion vs jewelry vs dental — very different economics
Recognized gold bullion (American Eagles, Krugerrands, Canadian Maples, PAMP bars) is the simplest to evaluate — it's already refined, verified, and universally recognized. It pays the closest to the wholesale market of anything gold.
Karat jewelry, class rings, and dental gold have to be sorted, melted, assayed, and refined before the pure metal is recovered. That work costs real money and it's why jewelry and scrap don't quote at bullion numbers — no matter who the buyer is.
Designer, branded, and antique jewelry sometimes has resale value beyond its metal content. That gets evaluated separately.
Weight matters more than most people realize
The pennyweight of a 14K chain, or the exact gram weight of a class ring, has a bigger effect on the offer than most people expect. Any honest buyer will weigh in front of you on a scale accurate to at least a tenth of a gram. If they weigh in a back room or on a scale you can't see, walk out.
